Edema or water retention can cause swelling in the legs, feet, and hands.  It is usually manifested by the accumulation of fluids in the tissue, cavities, and the circulatory system.

Usually, edema happens due to pregnancy, or the usage of some medications, premenstrual syndrome, physical inactivity, and sedentary lifestyle.

The condition is not as serious, however, it can be a sign of heart failure and kidney disease sometimes.

Hence, we will now present you the most common causes of water retention and how you can treat it.

Causes of Water Retention and How to Treat It

Dehydration

If your body is dehydrated, it will retain water. This will, in turn, lead to swellings in the body. So, you will need to avoid soda drinks and drinks that are rich in caffeine. Make sure you consume more water.

Magnesium Deficiency

Magnesium deficiency might cause water retention. In fact, research has shown that women who have premenstrual symptoms can use 200 milligrams a day of magnesium and the water retention will be reduced.

So, you need to consume foods that are rich in magnesium. For instance, you can consume dried fruits, spinach, dark chocolate, nuts, whole grains, peas, dark green veggies, and avocados.

Excessive Sodium Intake

If you do not drink as much water as your body needs and if you consume a lot of foods that are rich in sodium, the body will start accumulating water and this will cause edema.

So, you need to avoid the consumption of canned vegetables, processed meat, and condiments, also- table salt. Instead, try using Celtic and Himalayan sea salt.

Vitamin B6 Deficiency

Water retention is most of the time caused by vitamin B6 deficiency. There is a study which was published in the Journal of Caring Sciences that involved women that experienced water retention as a symptom of premenstrual syndrome. After they took some vitamin B6, their condition was improved.

Moreover, if you consume whole foods, dried fruits, chicken, bananas, turkey, tuna, sunflower seeds, pistachio nuts, potatoes with skin, or lean beef, you will be able to optimize the levels of the vitamin.

Potassium Deficiency

Our body needs some potassium because it usually regulates the water and improves the functions of tissues, body organs, and cells. So, if the levels of the potassium are low, then it will lead to water retention. Therefore, try consuming foods that are richer in it. You can eat more honey, melons, watermelons, and rockmelons.

Excessive Consumption of Processed Foods

Processed foods are full of sugar and sodium, these cause edema. What is more, these are also full of additives which are toxic. This can overburden the kidneys and the liver.

But, these plants we will show you have very powerful diuretic properties and they will reduce water retention. Check them out:

  • Fennel
  • Dandelion
  • Parsley
  • Garlic
  • Hibiscus
  • Horsetail
